![]() ![]() Claude Garamond’s typefaces were used in the printing of many books in Roman and Latin. A longtime popular text type, Granjon's digital version is sometimes criticized as being "anemic" in smaller point sizes. Claude Garamond had a unique style of designing type that did not exactly resemble a scribe’s handwriting, rather a kind of typeface which even though boasted a calligraphist feel, was easier to use with printing presses. Warde commented "It would seem that Garamond's name, having so long been used on a design he never cut, is now by stern justice left off a face which is undoubtedly his." ) Jones developed a companion bold named Bernhard, named for sixteenth-century engraver Bernard Salomon. Sabon died in 1580, and his widow married Konrad. ![]() Sabon became owner of a German foundry when he married the granddaughter of the Frankfurt printer, Christian Egenolff. Georgia is a serif typeface designed in 1993 by Matthew Carter and hinted by Tom Rickner for Microsoft.It was intended as a serif typeface that would appear elegant but legible when printed small or on low-resolution screens. He completed a set of his teacher's punches after Garamond's death in 1561. (Many of the Garamond revivals of the 1920s were later shown to be actually based on the types of Jean Jannon Granjon was an exception to this. Jakob Sabon, who the type is named for, was a student of the great French punchcutter Claude Garamond. Granjon was popular in the metal type era and Beatrice Warde described it as her favourite revival of French renaissance typefaces in her famous 1926 article on the topic it was also praised by former Linotype designer Walter Tracy. Jones, a master printer based in London, had been engaged by Linotype to improve the quality of their typeface range through the development of revivals of notable type designs of the past. Because several other Garamonds were on the market in the 1920s, Jones decided to name his type Granjon. Rather, it’s a group of serifs that were originally designed by 16th century engraver Claude Garamond. The roman design was from Claude Garamond and the italic version was from Robert Granjon. It is an exclusively digital typeface that has never been manufactured as metal type. 1 2 It is a redrawn version of Monotypes own Twentieth Century, a copy of Bauers Futura, to match the widths of ITC Avant Garde Gothic. Jones around 1924 for the British branch of the Linotype company, and based on the Garamond typeface that was used in a book printed by the Parisian Jean Poupy in 1592.
