![]() It is important to keep in mind that direct contact with non-natives was not the only source of change among Indian peoples. Tatoosh and Wife, Neah Bay, 1792 (right). These engravings after early drawings show some of the bold patterning of Northwest Coast native art. But the most important aspect of the maritime fur trade was that it brought natives and non-natives into immediate and close contact, with profound ramifications for both peoples and for regional history. Moreover, early maritime fur traders behaved as explorers because, in seeking more furs (or, more correctly, Indians willing to sell furs more cheaply), they scouted a great deal of the coastline in the region, filling in the many gaps that "real" explorers like Cook and Vancouver had left in their maps. It is unlikely, for example, that British interest in the region would have been so keen had not Cook's crew discovered the profitability of sea otter pelts in Chinese markets. For one thing, the opportunity to make money attracted non-Indian peoples to the region much more quickly than they otherwise might have come, so that dozens of ships sailed to the Northwest Coast within two decades of the first explorers' arrival. The maritime fur trade, although often overlooked in textbooks, was a crucial phase in the early history of the Pacific Northwest. (University of Washington Special Collections.) Can't say enough about how much fun we had - a huge shout out to all the employees who made our trip so darn memorable - THANKS.… We also had fun with picking from a huge assortment of lunch items, to pack up and take out on the water. I don't mean large portions of your every day food fare.We got to enjoy a true artist at work - the food was amazing. Chef Josh and staff know how to lay out a meal!! NOTE: Fish hard and come back HUNGRY! Each course, every night was something to ponder upon while out on water, waiting to reel in the next big one. PS- don't bother bringing rain gear, they provide you HH. The boats are terrific and come with all your basic fishing needs. We booked a guided trip (to get the lay of the waters), as well as renting one of their boats. Maybe stayed up a little too late, glued to the pool table for a night of fun and libations - but that just adds to the challenge of chasing after those early AM fish. Sleeping on the water is just special and the beds are comfy. The facilities were well equipped & super clean. Everyone was so nice, accommodating and knowledgeable. We love to fish and this was our first experience with being "spoiled" while vacation-fishing. Took our son for a college graduation adventure trip and it was amazing. NSR provides one of the most memorable experiences that Canada has to offer.… Also, it's not uncommon to see otters, seals, whales and jumping salmon. From rolling open sea to green glass channels the water is sure to keep you taking photos and the sharp hills that surround the waters are green and lush. Dayle (I'm not sure of her title) is one of the most organised women that I have ever encountered and she strives to make every moment of your trip memorable. Want wine with dinner? It's already at your table. Need a thermos of coffee for the boat? It's already packed. Those men and women have thought of everything. The food is 5 star, the rooms are beautiful and the staff is so on point that you will never want for anything. I know that he said that he was looking to retire but if you ask for him, and get him, he'll make your whole trip. In the lulls between catching a lot of fish he would diligently work the lines and lures and maintain easy and interesting conversation with us. Brent was not only a great guide but he was also great company. I was lucky enough to bring in a 25 lbs Spring Salmon and I will never forget that experience. He taught us how to reel in the big ones and took us to every spot where we found them. The fishing was incredible!! Our guide Brent was fantastic! He kept an immaculate boat that was super clean and very well equipped. ![]() We recently visited NSR for 4 days and 3 nights of fishing, dinning and stunning views.
